MELISSA REID - LPGA GOLFER - BIT BY SNAKE IN CHINA - 2

There was a natural hazard of a different kind for Melissa Reid as she was bitten by a six-foot snake during last weekend's Ladies European Tour event in China.

The 23-year-old pro from the UK was treated on the course for 20 minutes after being bitten on the leg when she was playing the 16th hole of the second round in the Sanya Ladies Open.

After being seen by medical staff, Reid continued to play the hole, chipping to six feet before sinking her fourth birdie putt of the day.

She then lipped out on 17 and got up and down on the 18th before being taken to hospital for tests.

Thankfully, there was no lasting damage and Reid was able to play in the third round, shooting 69 to finish 16th at 1 under.

"We were on the 16th and Mel said, 'Oh my God, Lee, I've been bitten by a snake!'" said her caddie, Lee Griffiths.

"It was about six foot long and jumped at her out of the grass from behind a drain. I saw its fangs and I said, 'I can see it's bitten you because you're bleeding.'

"We had reassurance from the green-keeper that it's not deadly. We were taking the cut through behind the 12th green and it's a little swampy down there."

The worst of Reid's problems in the tournament were of her own making, as a poor first round of 78 left her practically out of contention after the opening day.

Her round included six bogeys as she failed to make a single birdie, but she started to turn that around in the second round.

In fact, Reid went bogey-free through the rest of the tournament as she hit four birdies in a second-round 68 and followed that with three birdies in the final round.

That was a good recovery for Reid but, with only four more events remaining on this year's tour calendar, her chances of finishing the year as Europe's No. 1 were dealt a setback in China.

South African Lee-Anne Pace, who began the event in second place on the LET Money List, one place ahead of Reid, overtook Laura Davies by winning the 30,000 euros first prize in Sanya.

A final round of 66 gave Pace a one-shot victory at 11 under par. It was her fourth win of the season.
